Finding a Cigar Store Near You

Friday, April 30th, 2010

I am a newly cigar smoker and can’t decide whether it is better get cigars online or at Cigar Stores locally. Buying cigars online seems to be ok, you can find your favorites pretty much anywhere online. But, you have to be careful of the company you are buying from. Are they safe, do they sell quality cigars, how long is it going to take to get my cigars? There are many other questions that I ask myself when I think about buying online. I also am not quite sure if you can get a better deal online or at the local shop.  The good thing about buying locally is that you have an experience sales man, often the owner, to inquire about specific cigars.  Cigars tend to be cheaper online, but after the shipping costs, they are about the same as if you picked them up.  Some towns that are way out there may not have a local tobacconist that is reasonably close, so I can see ordering online. Luckily for me, there is one about 4 miles from my house.  It also has a lounge, so if I want to relax with a nice cigar, I can sit and watch a big screen tv and enjoy my stogie in peace.  I have also heard of some places that are smaller and are tacked onto the back of gas stations. My friend took me to one near us, and surprising it had quite a large humidor.  I was thinking that I wasn’t going to buy anything before I got there.  I have bought some machine mades from a gas station before, and they were really stale. But this place actually had a large seletion of cigars inside the humidor. They didn’t have my favorite brand, but it was worth checking out.  I really like the cigar stores that are near me and even though the selection is fewer than ordering online, I like the experience you get from going into a place and being able to socialize with other smokers. And the staff usually has plenty of knowledge about cigars that I am trying for the first time. And what happens when I run out and want to smoke a cigar.  If I have to order online, then I have to wait for them to arrive. With Cigar Stores so close to me, they really are better in a pinch and I plan on sticking to my favorite place, which has great atmosphere and is quite relaxing.

Try White Owl Smokes

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

White Owl Cigars have been around for many many years and I have smoked them for as long as i can remember. I discovered an article from July 1932 about the General Cigar company, which manufacturer’s White Owls. At the time, these machine made cigars were being sold at seven cents. And that price was a bit to high for cigar smokers of that day. The medium price of a machine made was about five cents. Many people went to General to get them to reduce their price down to 5 cents. Not only did they want the price decreased, but they didn’t need the stogie to be changed in any way. They wanted the same size and quality filler at a lower cost. White Owl cigars are made with the costliest filler that the US grows and is a quality cigar that some aficionado’s didn’t mind paying one or two extra cents. Many executives of the company were not willing to switch the price, they’d be making the lowest profit from the change and other firms using scraps and damaged ends of tobacco would still be making a serious profit margin, for less superior cigars. In the end, the choice was made to low the prices, but keeping the practice of great long filler and over sized cigars. Once the reduction was put into effect, the company broke records for fast increase in consumption. They managed to do this with arranged production and vast output. I just wish they continue to only cost 5 cents per cigar, that would save me a lot of money, I believe that I would be fine with paying the seven cents too.

A way to keep your Smoke in Perfect Condition

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

For folk who smoke stogies, it can become something of an obsession. Over time, cigar smokers frequently develop precise rituals that they stick to every time they smoke a stogie, and can be quite particular about how they store their smokes.  If you’re not privy to this obsession of smoking the  ‘perfect’ cigar, then you also probably don’t get the requirement for a cigar humidor.  The basic purpose of a cigar humidor is to both store and protect cigars.  Many cigar enthusiasts believe that cigars need to be stored at a specific temperature in order to maintain their top flavor.  That’s’s exactly what the cigar humidor does – maintains a constant temperature.  You won’t have to store machine made cigars like your Black and Milds in a humidor. Opinions change, but it’s’s typically thought that the range between 68 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit is ideal for cigars.  The humidity also must be controlled, and kept at a level typically 70-72% humidity.  Cigar fans have long debated about the ideal temperature required for the storing of cigars.  Some insist that even a slight fluctuation in temperature can prove detrimental to the flavor of their cigars, and insist on a temperature of seventy degrees Fahrenheit.  Others are a bit more flexible and allow a slight quantity of temperature fluctuation.  Generally all of them agree the lower the temperature, the quicker the cigar will age, which will then bring about a decrease in flavor.  If you want to maintain the flavor, integrity and color of your favorite smokes, then a cigar humidor is critical.  What features should you be on the lookout for buying a cigar humidor?  The one necessary feature is that it has to be fully closed once the lid is shut.  If the lid isn’t snug and secure, then it’s possible the temperature or humidity within will vary.  A lid that’s’s tight also impedes any other outside elements contaminating the cigars, and stops any moisture exchange.  It’s beneficial if the inside of the cigar humidor is smooth and seamless, to prevent snagging of cigars ( or fingers ).  It is also handy to have fittings within the humidor to help in the keeping of the smokes.

Great Stogie flavors

Friday, February 19th, 2010

Each brand and kind of cigar tastes different. While the wrapper does not completely determine the flavour of the cigar, darker wrappers tend to produce sweetness, while lighter wrappers sometimes have a “drier” taste. Whether a cigar is mild, medium, or full bodied does not correlate with quality. Cigars like Miami Suites Cigars are nice and mild with a choice of interesting flavorings.  Different smokers will have different preferences, some liking one good cigar better than another, others arguing. Some words used to describe cigar flavour and texture include ; spicy, peppery ( red or black ), sweet, tough, burnt, fruity, earthy, woodsy, leathery, cocoa, roasted, aged, nutty, creamy, cedar, oak, chewy, and green.

Merely Days till the Smoking Prohibition

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

All Right, my town has adopted a smoking ban for all public facilities, with only a small number exceptions. I am so done with my rights being taken away, I am sick. I can’t fathom the reason non-smokers have such a sharp opinion on what we smokers are doing. Everyone knows that smoking is unsafe, but I made a conscience decision when I began smoking, observant of the fact it was harmful. Just because non-smokers want me to stop, won’t mean that it will happen. Smoking in restaurants has been a allowance, but most restaurants include a designated smoking room. If non-smokers don’t want to inhale the smoke, don’t sit in the smoking room, you are not forced to sit in the smoking section. And as well as the jobholers of these bars that state they are distressed by second hand smoke, I don’t believe it. I was employeed in the restaurant business for more than 10 years, and I know that almost all of thepeople I worked with were smokers.  Doing business with the public, always, initiates you to puff.  Personally, I have never overheard any non-smoking co-worker ever complain about smoking while at work in the smoking room. Putting a smoking prohibition in restaurants and bars, ultimately will only save me money, because I won’t dine out after the first of the year.

All I need for the holiday: Stogies!

Friday, December 18th, 2009

I have concluded this year to beg for simple presents that my wife can pick out competently for me. My number one gift, as always, is my favored stogie from al-capone-cigars.com. She doesn’t even have to leave our home, she can go on the internet (I have all my favorites sites saved) and enter the order there. As far as other gifts, she can go to the nearest shop and choose a gift. She mentions every holiday that I am totally complicated man to get gifts for. But we have been together for about 15 years! And if she doesn’t know the things I admire by now, I quit. I continuously mention every year, “I want smokes”, I enjoy 1 or 2 in a day, and that adds up. I have a humidor for holding my smokes, “what’s that for?” my love inquires. Well my beloved, it’s to keep my smokes fresh. So, if you get me cigars for christmas I can keep them in there for a few months and remove one when I am wanting to savor one. Although I have to say, I got blessed with luck last year, my love gave me a lighter that was ingraved with my initials. The year before, she gave me a fishing pole, because I said I wanted to go fishing again someday. Well, I went fishing only once in two years, but guess what, I still puff 1-2 smokes every day. So what do I want for the holiday this year? I want Stogies, and all else would just be an added pleasure.

Cigars: Information for the typical tobacco smoker

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

The simplest method of identifying cigars is by the method in which they are made. Cigars are either rolled by hand, or manufactured by machines. The beginner smoker may be tempted to start by trying those machine made brands sold in Drug Stores, such as Dutch Masters. However, the aspiring connoisseur should consider spending a few more pennies and moving up to hand rolled cigars, which are sold online or at a local smokeshop.

Aficiando Vs Connoisseurs
TypicalIndividual cigar smokers have their own specific tastes, and have their own individual bugeting. Those who enjoy smoking several cigars per day may need an “everyday” cigar that is cheap. Therefore, the taste and cost of machine made cigars can be very attractive to some smokers. However, to the aspiring or experienced connoisseurs, the ones who enjoy an occasional cigar as a special treat, the hand rolled cigar is worth every cent.
